Zǎo – Breakfast Anytime at Seksyen 19, Petaling Jaya

Minimalist interior breakfast & brunch restaurant that offers quite a variety of breakfast you could think of. Pretty insta-worthy for those who enjoys taking pictures.

Note: This is a self service restaurant so do remember to collect your orders and clean up your mess after you’ve finished your meal!

Fluffy Kid (RM 17)

Lightly seasoned, not too much wow factors about this but if you don’t feel like having carbs this is a pretty good option to go for.

Scrambled eggs were fluffy as promised however the diced luncheon meat was a little mushy. The side salad was crisp, fresh and delicious!

Like Burger Like Sandwich (RM 20)

One thing I love about this place is that that they don’t use regular white breads in their menu but hearty & healthy ones like this one right here, Purple Chia Seed Toast. The pork loin in the sandwich was pretty juicy.

Multigrain Toast (RM 14)

A simple yet filling choice for vegetarian diners. Generous spread of avocado with a sunny side up.

Didn’t tried any of their drinks because we wanted to go elsewhere for coffee.

Might probably visit this place again but not anytime soon.🤷🏻‍♀️

南洋冰室 NanYang Cafe at Cheras Traders Square

NanYang Cafe is a local culinary brand who offers fusion interpretation of Nanyang delicacies.

You may have to queue for a table during lunch hours as hungry customers come about for their signature favourites such as Hong Kong Style Wanton Noodles, Freshly Baked Polo Bun, Nanyang Coffee & Tea.

Prawns & Wonton with Noodles in Soup (RM 11.90)

Their springy noodles and silky juicy prawn wontons rest in a hearty bowl of hot aromatic broth had indeed gained their recognition.

Would definitely recommend this dish.👍

Special Pork Knuckle in Preserved Bean Sauce with Tossed Noodles (RM 12.90)

If you’re looking for something a little more heavier, you should give this a try.

For its price and generous portion of pork knuckle offered, it was definitely worth it. It was really well marinated and almost melt to mouth texture.

Lettuce with Oyster Sauce (RM 7.90)

Beautifully blanched but glad the oyster sauce wasn’t mixed into the lettuce because it was ridiculously salty!

Signature Jumbo Toast with Ice Cream (RM 16.80)

Got to admit the toast was delicious and lightly buttered. It’s definitely not a dessert for 2 but for a 3 – 4 pax.

Would’ve been better if there’s an additional scoop of ice cream so it wouldn’t be too dry. Not recommended and worth the value.🙅‍♀️

I would strongly recommend to go for the freshly baked breads instead. It was definitely a lot more satisfying than the Jumbo Toast we had.

Pineapple Bun with Butter (RM 4/each)

HK street food cravings satisfied!💕 I love how they placed a thick slice of butter on top of an ice cube. It’s really soft and fluffy!

If the crust on the bun was crunchy crumbly sweet cookie-like it would’ve made is so much better. Definitely my favorite and to-go-for at this establishment.

Pumpkin & Cheese Bun (RM 4/each)

Same texture as the Pineapple Bun except this one has cream cheese fillings.

Nanyang Milk Tea (RM 4.90)

A hot cup of milk tea to pair with some breads. It tastes exactly like a ‘Teh Tarik’. Looks like one too!

It’s a decent place to have your HK cravings fixed and for its value. Would definitely drop by again for their Pineapple Bun!

Genki Sushi at Sunway Pyramid

Words can’t describe how hype I was when I was told Genki Sushi is back in Malaysia! Welcome back and I’ve missed you, Genki Sushi!😚

In celebration of its first outlet opening in Malaysia, Genki Sushi will be launching its menu consisting of 122 core food items that will definitely satiate your appetite along with the selections on the Dai Man Zoku and Genki Premium Selection menu.

Fun Fact: Did you know Genki Sushi’s ‘angry face’ logo is to visualize a serious, professional and confident face of a Japanese sushi expert chef?😡

This time they’ve stepped up their A-game and will definitely make their diners thrilled with the debut of its ‘Kousoku Express’ sushi delivery system and signature Dai Man Zoku selections here at Sunway Pyramid.

What’s Kousoku Express if you’re wondering? Instead of using the regular conveyor belt with plates of sushi making rounds after rounds, it delivers food items directly from the kitchen to the table as they want to ensure what they serve has to be fresh which also provide diners a different level of dining experience.

True to its innovation legacy since historic times in Japan, Genki Sushi continously incorporates technology into their preparation processes, capturing Japanese efficiency and speed at its best all whilst preserving quality simultaneously.

After the opening ceremony and sake breaking, we had an opportunity to make our very own Temaki. Not going to lie but it was pretty fun getting to test our skills. Guess who won 2nd prize and won RM30 dining vouchers?😂

Here’s how we’ll be ordering our food! A QR code will be provided upon seated and you may start ordering straight off from your phone. There’s no need to fuss on waiting for your turn to use the tab to order what you want.😬

I love how they provide Green Tea Powder instead of sachets. It has this really nice hints of vegetal and oceanic flavors to it.

Here’s a peek on what we had for those who crave nostalgia or ones who are curious what makes Genki Sushi different:

Scallop (RM 6.80)

We ordered some sushi from their ‘Premium Collection’. It was simply tender, sweet carefully butterfly-cut scallop. Simple yet pleasantly delicious.

Salmon & Flying Fish Roe (RM 9.80)

There’s this mouth-filling sensation having this. The salmon was so fresh.😍

Salmon Sashimi (RM13.80)

Look at the marbling on the salmon!😍

Fried Egg (RM 3.80)

Can’t go wrong with tamagoyaki! Slightly sweet, delicate and comforting.

Seared Salmon with Cheese (RM 6.80)

This was so addictive!

Seared Crab Stick with Cheese (RM 4.80)

Good choice for those who’d prefer a lighter option.

Corn Mayo Inari (RM 4.80)

Flying Fish Roe Inari (RM 7.80)
Tuna Mayo Inari (RM 4.80)

Y’all know I have mad love for inari.❤ The Corn Mayo was so sweet and crunchy, Flying Fish Roe were generously stuffed into the bean curd skin and Tuna Mayo has actual tuna flakes in it and not mushy.

Udon with Smoked Duck (RM 8.80)

Highly recommended! Smoked Duck was ridiculously flavorful and not too chewy. The udon was springy and slurpi-licious paired perfectly with the broth which was so comforting and satisfying.

Deep-fried Soft Shell Crab (RM 16.80)

Exceptional texture and surprisingly juicy inside. Definitely a recommended dish.

Deep-fried Oyster (RM 13.80)

Crunchy deep-fried to perfection evenly coated with batter.

Deep-fried Rice Cake with Cheese (RM 7.80)

This has to be one of my personal favorite here. You got to have it while it’s piping hot and stretch those cheesy goodness.😛

Deep-fried Salmon Skin (RM 8.80)

For those who’d prefer something a little more healthier, you should definitely order this. It may not be as crispy and a little chewy as you’d get a wee bit of salmon flesh on it.

Takoyaki (RM 7.80)

It’s pretty yum, just the right springy texture from the octopus.

Grilled Scallop with Cheese (RM 8.90)

Love the creamy texture from the cheese and mayo topped on the scallop.

Grilled Eel [half] (RM 28.80)

Soft, firm and barely has fishy aftertaste. Highly recommended to unagi lovers!

Grilled Mackerel (RM 12.80)

If you’re not too fond with eels, mackerel could be the other alternative to go for. Lightly salted but still super flavorful.

Steamed Egg Custard (RM 3.80)

And of course we can’t forget helping ourselves with a piping hot chawanmushi.

Morande Adventure Wine Dinner at Truffles Restaurant, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus

MORANDÉ ADVENTURE began in 2012 as part of their philosophy of innovation and taking a step beyond with their dreams. This is an initiative of Grupo Belen, in which the winemakers from the five related winery’s — Morande, Vistamar, Mancura, Zorzal & Fray Leon — produce their own wines.

41703341_10156775898317360_6005641439873073152_n

It was an extraordinary experience to have 10 restaurants together in ONE venue to serve you 10 varieties of bite size fine food and to pair with 10 different Morande Adventure’s – Hand Crafted – RED wines. One of The Adventure’s Winemaker, Mr Jorge Martinez, was in attendance as well.

Here were the astounding dishes served that night leaving most of us content (and tipsy!) :

“The Perfect Egg” in Truffle Cloud served with Brioche Mouillette

To start with, this dish was paired with Despechado — Cherry red and slightly opaque as it was not filtered. Wonderful aromas of red berries: primarily strawberries and mineral notes. It was light-bodied and refreshing with elegant and enveloping flavors.

Both wine and egg dish prepared by the students from School of Culinary Arts & Food Studies were paired perfectly not overpowering each other. I really enjoyed the creamy texture along with the oomph of black truffles. Could also be well paired with mild fish, pastas and white meats.

43610058_10216200193413064_4814768238439170048_n
Tuna Tartare with Mango, Avocado, Kyuri & Mint Sauce in Pai Tee & Wasabi Mayo

A dish prepared by Tatto paired with Malmau — Intensely red with a violet hue with notes of berries and violets with mineral touch. Its quite potent on the palate with well-rounded tannin with good texture. The presence of rich acidity makes this a very fresh and natural wine.

Personally I’d prefer pairing with a dish with stronger flavors such as slow-cooked fatty red meats or a braised lamb shank would be best.

43712889_10216200193013054_4315230651054817280_n
Papaya Salad with Infused Lemongrass Dried Beef Jerky

Sao Nam‘s papaya salad paired with VIGNO — Very intense purplish red. Quite pronounced aromas of red and sour cherries and black plums with subtle floral notes of violets as well as coffee and dark chocolate. It presents tremendous character with juicy red fruit recalling cherries and raspberries as well as light floral notes and toasted oak.

This was quite an enlivening pairing. Would paired well with pot roast, beef tartare, rabbit stew, Austrian beans, game meats and spit-roasted lamb.

43654201_10216200192253035_8379409223729020928_n
Red Wine Brined Duck Breast served with Ceps in Cream

Dish prepared by Meatology paired with El Gran Petit — Very deep and intense violet, almost black. A fruity and expressive with outstanding blue fruits such as fresh blackberries with a light touch of fine herbs. It was juicy, generous and loaded with structure. Fermenting it in a concrete egg magically transforms the two varieties’ notoriously potent tannin soft and velvety, round and mouth filling.

It was a great pairing: perfect with red meats, pork and game meats.

43532514_10216200191973028_7325352063775277056_n
Chicken Roulade stuffed with Chicken Ham & Mozzarella with Red Wine Sauce

Chicken Roulade by Spitalfield’s Gastrobar paired with Tirazis — beautiful reddish-purple. Lovely white pepper and black fruit with spices such as cinnamon and a bit of herbs aroma. Great medium-bodied with fine flavors and tremendous persistence. Good balance between acidity and tannin too.

It would’ve been better if the dish was served hot. This would be an excellent pairing with lean meats, fine cheeses and fatty fish.

43573207_10216200189772973_1693464257162641408_n
Grilled Cauliflower with Smoked Sauce

Goa by Hubba went an extra mile by preparing 2 dishes to be paired with CREOLE — Light raspberry red with aromas of red fruits such as raspberries, sour cherries, light earthy notes and spices recalling cinnamon. It was intensely fresh and fruity with a smooth texture. The moderately light body invites drinking one glass after another.

This has to be one of my favorite pairing throughout the dinner. Both dishes and wine executed perfectly. It would also be a spectacular pairing with deli meats and firm-textured cheeses. Delicioso!

43694607_10216200191573018_3695585832246181888_n
Grilled Prawn on a Trio of Capsicum Pieperade

A dish by Interlude TTDI to be paired with Aterciopelado — attractive, bright ruby red with aromas of red fruits such as cherries and plums with notes of herbs and nuts. Very charming. The flavors of red fruits with tremendous acidity complemented by potent tannin with a velvety finish. Seductor.

Another splendid dish well paired with the wine. The prawn was very fresh and flavorful. Would also be a great pairing with stewed meats and game birds.

43500789_10216200192533042_1141168227817095168_n
Chili Butter Cream Clams with Garlic Bread

Two Sons Bistro‘s dish paired with Mediterraneo — Deep, intense cherry red with aromas of red fruits such as sour cherries and raspberries with notes of hazelnuts and aromatic spices. Flavors were fresh, fruity and juicy with tremendous balance between sweetness and tannin. Great persistent red fruit on the long, lingering finish.

This dish was a crowd pleaser with a terrific pairing. It will also work with red meat, game and stews.

43617985_10216200190933002_5427866174174003200_n
Rustic Beef Onion with Pink Peppercorns Sauce

Rustic beef onion by Pintu at Old Malaya paired with El Padre — Deep, dense and bright purplish-red. Wonderful aromas of black fruits, coffee and dark chocolate. The spicy note simply recalls cloves and vanilla.

The beef was wee overcooked however it was a decent pairing. Would also be nicely paired with some serrano ham, lean meats and aged cheeses.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to try the Mancura Spiced Poached Pear Creme Brulee & Chili Madeleine prepared yet again by the students from School of Culinary Arts & Food Studies as there were limited portions but I was able to taste the paired wine, Mancura Leyenda Gran Reserva — A very deep, brilliant wine. Its red color was enhanced by the suggestive violet highlights. Nosing was highly complex in the beginning, opening gradually to reveal its notes of ash with red fruits, combined with subtle hints of rose petals and blackcurrant. It is complex and structured in the mouth, but at the same time fresh and elegant. Its potent tannin was complemented by touches of mocha, bitter chocolate and sweet cinnamon. It has a very pleasant finish with long persistence. Recommended for well-seasoned red meats.

43722738_10216211277690164_4832819590847266816_n

These wines are the results of a more experimental works on behalf of the winemakers. They are bolder, more daring wines made without having to follow pre-established rules. They are their enological adventures that surprise and impress for their diversity, innovation & quality.

Thank you for sharing this experience that has been bottled with love & freedom!

Rasa Utara at Berjaya Times Square

The Northern fare Rasa Utara is celebrating its 34th year of business, and currently the outlet operating in Berjaya Times Square aims to serve the best of Northern inspired cuisines.

Ironic enough, throughout my studies in this building I’ve never thought of walking into this restaurant before as it was a little beyond the ‘student budget’ and most of my course mates would often prefer Western cuisines.

March Azalea Kitchen is known for its fusion of Malaysian and Japanese flavors and their signature Egg Rice menu. Their ambiance is pretty cozy and relaxing especially where they’ve got a long table with skylight ceilings. FYI plants in pots by the wall are for sale! Seats may be a little limited so if you’re looking forward on trying their food, visit them during weekdays would be best. Their service is pretty good and food doesn’t takes too long to arrive!

What you’re looking at right now is their signature dish and as you know, Malaysians love their ‘stinky’ food. This rice bowl was really addicting! We’ve been told that some customers would have up to 3 bowls by themselves! Would totally do the same.

New York Cheese (RM 12.80)

This cheesecake was creamy, and smooth, and rich, and dense, and absolutely delicious. Its not only sweet but you get that really nice creamy cheesy flavors in it. So yum!👅

Hot Rose Milk (RM 6.80)

Aromatic rose petals topped on hot frothy milk. Perfect to have in the morning or before bed. Packed with health benefits too! Especially for the ladies!💃

Can’t wait to try out what’s more on their menu!

Skyhaus Coffee . Gelato . Bakery at Taman Mayang

The haus for great friendship and good food!

20171018_161644-01

Klang Valley has been blossoming with great vegetarian and vegan dining scenes!

Skyhaus Coffee is a new vegetarian cafe on the block recently opened 3 months ago serving only 100% Arabica premium ground coffee, sugar-free gelatos & sorbets, Nama chocolates and handmade breads!

20171018_161625-01

Just so you know, these aren’t macaroons but sorbets and gelatos!

20171018_161632-01

Nama Chocolate, melt-in-mouth smooth silky texture with lovely hints of nutty flavors and aftertaste that lingers.

20171018_173738-01
Delicious unique handmade breads baked in limited quantities!

20171018_161755-01

Service was excellent and staffs were very friendly and knowledgeable with their products.

Food and drinks were served in a timely manner and the right temperature too!

I’ve got to admit everything looks pretty amazing here.

As we were lucky to be there during their Tea Time hours where they’d only be serving (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM) daily, so here’s what we’ve ordered!

20171018_163515-01
Lorraine Village (RM 10.90)

A warming pie with a golden crust and delicious filling served with fries with a really unique sauce. It’s cheesy-licious goodness but fillings are a little too salty. Fries had a nice crisp skin and light, fluffy interior.

20171018_163726-01
Spicy G-ken Burger (RM 10.90)

This burger was fire!🔥🔥🔥 It’s actually pretty delicious! Personally I’m not a huge fan of meat analogue but this one didn’t had that odd artificial flavors which was bearable. Bear in mind this burger is really spicy! I wouldn’t recommend to kids or anyone who can’t tolerate spicy foods.

20171018_163947-01
Egg Salad (RM 10.90)

Simple yet healthy and hearty.🥗 I’m obsessed with their dressing that complements this salad so well! It has that really nice sesame and peanut flavors. Everything in plate was so fresh and crispy it gets really addicting you’d catch yourself forking for more!

20171018_164803-01
Portuguese Fried Rice (RM 9.50)

There’s really strong smoky flavor or wok hei you’d get from this dish. Sadly the rice is portioned into a sad small little cone for something so addicting.
I’d totally recommend this dish though!

20171018_174933-01
Romeo & Juliet Combo (RM 25)

Finally, dessert time! Those gelatos and sorbets on the display looked so tempting I had to give it a try!

We got ourselves Rasp-Mango gelato & Rose Lychee sorbet for the Romeo & Juliet Combo where you could pick any 2 scoops which were then topped with chopped pistachios and waffles then garnished with chocolate.

Both were absolutely refreshing and weren’t too sweet at all. Flavors were really distinctive.

20171018_181804-01
Yuzu Sorbet (RM 12.50)

I 💖 anything yuzu!

Very refreshing and delightful yuzu sorbet that immediately refreshes your palate with irresistibly tasty and citrusy-floral flavor of the yuzu fruit.

It was the perfect way to end a healthy meal and absolutely guilt-free!

Overall I really did enjoy my dining experience here. Food was beyond satisfactory, coffee was amazing and ambiance was comfy. Absolutely worth the value.👍

However I do wish the cafe makes some changes on their menu as it was rather inconvenient to ask what’s the particular dish about especially when some of their dishes are given unique names and ingredients used were not listed.

Will definitely be back again for more!

Ichiban Boshi at Pavilion KL

IMG-20171014-WA0038-01

Whenever anyone asks me “Any good sushi place at Bukit Bintang you’d recommend that’s really good yet affordable?” I’d just reply “Ichiban Boshi.” with a huge grin.

After visiting Yokoso Tastefully Japan (if you’ve not read about it click here), me and my homegirl Vanessa went window shopping at Pavilion and after a long walk we were craving for some hot drinks with good food which of course, we had to drop by!

We were craving for more Japanese food after all.

Chawanmushi (RM 4.80)

To begin with, we wanted some hot appetizer. The texture of the egg custard was comforting, silky smooth, really rich in flavors and was also beautifully cooked.

Their chawanmushi was loaded with sliced shitake mushrooms, a chunk of chicken and gingko.

It makes such a lovely starter!

Their service was fantastic and staffs were absolutely hospitable. Your cup of tea will never be left empty! They’d also ensure your overall dining experience was beyond satisfactory.

Next we’ll let the photos do the talking. One thing for sure, all of them were like having a party in your mouth!

The Klang Taste at MyTown Shopping Centre

IMG-20171013-WA0013-01

The Klang Taste is one of the new eateries in MyTown Shopping Centre that was opened 3 months ago. This restaurant focuses on the most authentic food in Klang, where they’ve also claimed that most Klang food lovers would agree how much they could bring those flavors from the royal town to the city centre.

They’re currently having a weekday promotion price starting from RM12.90++ where any main course comes with a FREE drink & dessert!

Ambiance was pretty comfortable and seating arrangements were spacious. The restaurant has a floor to ceiling window that overviews a construction site and IKEA Cheras.

As for the service, the staffs were quite attentive, friendly and tried upselling a couple of items on the menu however their menu knowledge has to be improved. Before entering the restaurant, we asked the staff who was standing in front of the menu stand if there are any vegetarian dishes available in the restaurant and the staff kept pointing us fish dishes that are ‘vegetarian’ and telling us the meat or fish in the noodle or rice could be removed but served with the same soup. Um okay? Anyways, we were starving and didn’t want to asked anymore so we just went for it.

CYMERA_20171013_182413

As part of the promotion, the selection of drinks are the ones only from the Green Tea section.

The drinks were alright. They weren’t too sweet nor bland. Ordered them hot to complement the rainy weather.

On the other hand, the food and drinks didn’t take too long to arrive. They were all served in a timely manner!

Nasi Lemak with Chicken Rendang (RM13.90)

The chicken rendang was a little disappointing. You can tell from the photo how dry the meat was and the rendang which is one of the key elements in the dish was surprisingly watery. Fish crackers tasted a little rancid too.

Oh no.

Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken
(RM13.90)

Noticed anything different from the chicken rendang? For some reason both tasted pretty much the same probably what’s missing are the condiments to replicate the dish above. Not even some potatoes!

Vegetarian Fried Rice
(13.90)

This fried rice is loaded with veggies! Finally something less disappointing. There’s also a really delicious smoky flavor you get from the wok like the ones from your nearby Chinese restaurants but here’s the problem with this dish, there’s fish crackers.

The service staff checked with the kitchen and apparently they’ve ran out of vegetable crackers which they’ve left no choice but to be replaced with fish crackers.

Some people believe that vegetarians can eat fish, while others do not. Some people even think that eating small amounts of poultry can be part of a vegetarian diet. A vegetarian diet is traditionally plant-based, but there are many types of vegetarian diets, such as semi-vegetarian and vegan. (Livestrong.com , 2017)

Butter Chicken Rice
(RM17.90)

The fried chicken was delicious. It was well marinated till packed with flavors, meat was juicy and really crispy on the outside. As for the sauce, they claimed that they’re using Australian butter but there was barely hints of butter and creamy flavors instead it tasted rather sweet and caramel-like.

20171012_160105-01

That wasn’t the best meal we’ve had in a while. We ended our meal with a simple nostalgic mango pudding drizzled with some evaporated milk.

Was the food worth the value?
With the weekday promotion, yes.

Will I be back for more?
Most probably not.
