南洋冰室 NanYang Cafe at Cheras Traders Square

NanYang Cafe is a local culinary brand who offers fusion interpretation of Nanyang delicacies.

You may have to queue for a table during lunch hours as hungry customers come about for their signature favourites such as Hong Kong Style Wanton Noodles, Freshly Baked Polo Bun, Nanyang Coffee & Tea.

Prawns & Wonton with Noodles in Soup (RM 11.90)

Their springy noodles and silky juicy prawn wontons rest in a hearty bowl of hot aromatic broth had indeed gained their recognition.

Would definitely recommend this dish.👍

Special Pork Knuckle in Preserved Bean Sauce with Tossed Noodles (RM 12.90)

If you’re looking for something a little more heavier, you should give this a try.

For its price and generous portion of pork knuckle offered, it was definitely worth it. It was really well marinated and almost melt to mouth texture.

Lettuce with Oyster Sauce (RM 7.90)

Beautifully blanched but glad the oyster sauce wasn’t mixed into the lettuce because it was ridiculously salty!

Signature Jumbo Toast with Ice Cream (RM 16.80)

Got to admit the toast was delicious and lightly buttered. It’s definitely not a dessert for 2 but for a 3 – 4 pax.

Would’ve been better if there’s an additional scoop of ice cream so it wouldn’t be too dry. Not recommended and worth the value.🙅‍♀️

I would strongly recommend to go for the freshly baked breads instead. It was definitely a lot more satisfying than the Jumbo Toast we had.

Pineapple Bun with Butter (RM 4/each)

HK street food cravings satisfied!💕 I love how they placed a thick slice of butter on top of an ice cube. It’s really soft and fluffy!

If the crust on the bun was crunchy crumbly sweet cookie-like it would’ve made is so much better. Definitely my favorite and to-go-for at this establishment.

Pumpkin & Cheese Bun (RM 4/each)

Same texture as the Pineapple Bun except this one has cream cheese fillings.

Nanyang Milk Tea (RM 4.90)

A hot cup of milk tea to pair with some breads. It tastes exactly like a ‘Teh Tarik’. Looks like one too!

It’s a decent place to have your HK cravings fixed and for its value. Would definitely drop by again for their Pineapple Bun!

Kaya 婆婆 Pushcart at Lorong Yap Ah Loy

20180106_134101-01

At the entrance of an alleyway opposite Maybank, this 40-year-old stall is manned by an old woman herself. She offers some pretty delectable kaya Swiss rolls, kaya puffs, egg tarts and kaya. The stall used to be located in an alleyway opposite Central Market.

20180106_134224-01

What makes her Swiss roll so remarkable is the fragrant kaya made from old coconuts. The sponge cake texture was rather light and fluffy as for the taste its a little too sweet for my liking especially when the kaya itself is already sweet. You can purchase them half or a whole Swiss roll.

To some people (especially millennials lol) , it may not look as appetizing as it sounds but trust me, I’d say its one of the few ‘MUST TRY in KL’ and you probably may not be able to buy them in another few years time.

20180106_134216-01

Whenever I drop a visit at Kaya 婆婆’s stall, I’d usually go for her kaya puff for its flaky puff pastry and generous-filling of kaya. There are times especially when groups of tourists and even locals stumble across her pushcart as they were were exploring the older development of Kuala Lumpur, they would buy whatever she has to offer!
You wouldn’t miss the crowds surrounding her pushcart.

20180106_134233-0120180106_134629-01

Her egg tarts aren’t actually her unique selling point nor does it have a wow factor to it but from what I perceive, it’s more for ones who craves nostalgia.

20180106_135058-01

You could also try packing the kaya home as it’ll make a hearty breakfast treat by slapping some kaya and butter on a toast.

On her downtime you’d see her napping on a piece of cardboard box. She wakes up at 2am to starts baking her goods FYI! If you’re feeling hungry, walk down the alleyway and it will lead you to a stall that is famous for their sang har mee or freshwater prawns noodles.

Stall at Lorong Yap Ah Loy
Business Hours: 8 AM – 2 PM (Closed on Sundays)
Address: 5, Jalan Yap Ah Loy 50050 Kuala Lumpur.

Kama Bakery 泇茗麵包厂 at Seremban

Old-school bakeries are often underrated to us young millennials as it isn’t what’s in the current trend or … frankly because of how it looks. As rundown or old as it looks, I always see them as hidden jewels and timeless.

What I love best in this bakery is their egg tarts as it reminded me so much of when life was simpler and carefree. Such retro flavors instantly take consumers back to happy childhood times and revive tasty memories.

Was lucky enough to catch the bakers preparing some fresh batch of kaya puffs to be baked into crispy golden. I really like the crust as it is multi layered, crispy, flaky and with a good underlying slight salty taste of margarine. Didn’t get to snap the ones that were ready though!🙊

Here’s a quick snap of some curry puffs to be left to cool down. They’re beautifully stuffed with curry potatoes and egg which is suitable for vegetarians to relish into.

I don’t think this is part of the bakery’s but seeing this van stocked up with delectable nostalgic goods got me thrilled! I had to take a quick picture before its out and about.

Lucky Bakery at Seremban

20171107_123649-01

This locally produced bread has been around for decades in the heart of Seremban.
It is still a staple fare for most schoolkids till this very day during break time or for senior locals to have it with their coffee in their local coffee shop. You can’t declare you’re a true Seremban folk if you don’t recognize this iconic brand!

20171107_123954-01

It was definitely my lucky day to be able to have a short visit to their bakery after consuming it for awhile.

Personally I’m never much of a fan of cream rolls like Mighty White or Gardenia as I find the way too sweet and bread a little too dry. When I was first handed one of these I wasn’t too sure about it but now, every time I make a trip back to Seremban purchasing them is a must!

Here we’ve got the 2nd generation who still runs the bakery who then told us a bit of their history and their production.

20171107_123611-01

20171107_123744-01

This bakery only produces ONE type of cream roll and no other fancy flavors. There will be about 5000 to 6000 of these margarine cream rolls produced a day. It will then be delivered all around Seremban area and rarely, but some distant town in Negeri Sembilan.

How much is it you’re asking? They’re only selling for RM0.70Yes, 70 cents only!

IMG-20171011-WA0003-01

20171011_173723-01
Here’s how the packaging like if you’ve not seen it before! Bright yellow with with red wordings and two boys holding up a ‘LUCKY’ banner. Packaging is still kept traditional.

You can’t missed this right? It’s so yellow!

Don’t be worry about trying it my fellow vegetarian and vegan friends, you’re free to consume them as much as you want! No eggs and animal products contain!

20171011_173830-01

As simple as it looks, you’re looking a childhood especially for those who’s been growing up in Seremban and having this for breakfast during school days.

The bread texture is really soft , fluffy and doesn’t has that stick-to-throat feeling.

Actually, I’m not sure that’s a good thing, considering I could eat the entire dozen all on my own. Not guilty.

20171011_174001-01

It’s all about going back to the basics. Simple margarine cream that isn’t too sweet or sickly. The amount of cream is just right.

After all, we’re not eating the cream to get us stuffed. 😜

I truly understand why this cream roll is loved by all ages till today. This is a really simple comfort food that gives you a hearty feeling!

Note: It is an essential to purchase when visiting Seremban town!

20171107_125132-01

I really hope Lucky Bakery keeps it ongoing to ensure more people are aware of its brand. Rainy, we’re counting on you! 😂

Cappuccino Garden Cafe at Happy Garden

What’s great about neighborhood cafes are the fact that you’re at your comfort zone, you don’t personally know the people around you but you’re sure they live around here and enjoying each other company (and the food.) Cappuccino Garden is usually the spot for locals to have breakfast with their family on weekends as its pretty much the earliest cafe to be opened around the neighborhood.

20171022_090719-01
Homemade Farmer’s Breads (Saturday and Sunday only)

On weekends, freshly baked breads using only pure natural ingredients with no preservatives are sold. Be sure to get some for a healthy breakfast at home the next day or have it here with a cup of coffee! If that isn’t what you’re really craving for, they’ve got Danish pastry, cakes and muffins!

20171022_090756-01

20171022_090841-01

20171022_090740-01
Jim’s Muffin (RM 2.50/per muffin)

Jimmy Hooi, owner of Cappuccino Garden and the restaurant next door, Bacon & Balls ensures what’s serving in his restaurants are high quality and of course delicious. As a man who strives for quality, the food and beverage, service and ambiance are satisfactory. Food and drinks didn’t take too long to arrive and service staffs were friendly.

20171029_094031-01
Nasi Lemak with Chicken Rendang (RM 14.80)

The rendang was delicious, chicken was moist, rice isn’t as fragrant and condiments were alright.

20171022_092232-01
Botanic Omelette (RM 13.80)

Omelette was well stuffed with mushrooms, onions, capsicums and cheese. It’s like the ones you order from the egg station in hotels! The gourmet chicken sausages and baked beans were alright.

20171029_093711-01
Scrambled Egg (RM 12.80)

Scrambled eggs were deliciously buttery!

20171022_092200-01
Toast of Paris (RM 7.80)

A fancier name for a French toast that many devours. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with some honey drizzled on it to make things better.

20171022_091954-01
Traditional English Breakfast Set (RM 13.80)

An excellent choice for ones who wants something not too heavy but gets you stuffed.
2 soft-boiled eggs, 2 half sliced toast, sugar-free marmalade, butter and a cup of coffee? Deliciously affordable!

20171126_100052-01
Caesar Salad (RM 10.80)

There wasn’t much Caesar dressing so it’s a little dry but there’s definitely quite a lot of Parmesan Cheese on it.

20171029_094342-01
Focaccia Fish Sandwich  (RM 18.80)

If you’re wondering what’s that white thread its actually alfalfa. The fish fillet was beautifully pan-fried and their homemade Focaccia bread has really good crust to it.

20171022_092042-01
German Chicken Bratwurst (RM 15.80)

Who wouldn’t love bratwurst?🤤 A really simple and delicious dish you can’t expect anything fancy from a neighborhood cafe.

20171126_100123-01
7 Inch Cheese Chicken Frankfurters (RM 15.80)

I actually preferred this over the one above because there’s literally all my favorite things on one plate. Mashed potatoes were alright, would be better if there was some nice buttery flavors to it, sauteed mushrooms had some amazing garlic flavors and the frankfurter was just ordinary.

20171022_091402-01
Caffe Latte (RM 8.80)

I’d say this is a nice place to catch up with friends and families that lives around the neighborhood and its easy to park because there’s a stretch of parking lot right in front of the cafe but for something really food-gasmatic, not exactly.

Skyhaus Coffee . Gelato . Bakery at Taman Mayang

The haus for great friendship and good food!

20171018_161644-01

Klang Valley has been blossoming with great vegetarian and vegan dining scenes!

Skyhaus Coffee is a new vegetarian cafe on the block recently opened 3 months ago serving only 100% Arabica premium ground coffee, sugar-free gelatos & sorbets, Nama chocolates and handmade breads!

20171018_161625-01

Just so you know, these aren’t macaroons but sorbets and gelatos!

20171018_161632-01

Nama Chocolate, melt-in-mouth smooth silky texture with lovely hints of nutty flavors and aftertaste that lingers.

20171018_173738-01
Delicious unique handmade breads baked in limited quantities!

20171018_161755-01

Service was excellent and staffs were very friendly and knowledgeable with their products.

Food and drinks were served in a timely manner and the right temperature too!

I’ve got to admit everything looks pretty amazing here.

As we were lucky to be there during their Tea Time hours where they’d only be serving (2:30 PM – 5:30 PM) daily, so here’s what we’ve ordered!

20171018_163515-01
Lorraine Village (RM 10.90)

A warming pie with a golden crust and delicious filling served with fries with a really unique sauce. It’s cheesy-licious goodness but fillings are a little too salty. Fries had a nice crisp skin and light, fluffy interior.

20171018_163726-01
Spicy G-ken Burger (RM 10.90)

This burger was fire!🔥🔥🔥 It’s actually pretty delicious! Personally I’m not a huge fan of meat analogue but this one didn’t had that odd artificial flavors which was bearable. Bear in mind this burger is really spicy! I wouldn’t recommend to kids or anyone who can’t tolerate spicy foods.

20171018_163947-01
Egg Salad (RM 10.90)

Simple yet healthy and hearty.🥗 I’m obsessed with their dressing that complements this salad so well! It has that really nice sesame and peanut flavors. Everything in plate was so fresh and crispy it gets really addicting you’d catch yourself forking for more!

20171018_164803-01
Portuguese Fried Rice (RM 9.50)

There’s really strong smoky flavor or wok hei you’d get from this dish. Sadly the rice is portioned into a sad small little cone for something so addicting.
I’d totally recommend this dish though!

20171018_174933-01
Romeo & Juliet Combo (RM 25)

Finally, dessert time! Those gelatos and sorbets on the display looked so tempting I had to give it a try!

We got ourselves Rasp-Mango gelato & Rose Lychee sorbet for the Romeo & Juliet Combo where you could pick any 2 scoops which were then topped with chopped pistachios and waffles then garnished with chocolate.

Both were absolutely refreshing and weren’t too sweet at all. Flavors were really distinctive.

20171018_181804-01
Yuzu Sorbet (RM 12.50)

I 💖 anything yuzu!

Very refreshing and delightful yuzu sorbet that immediately refreshes your palate with irresistibly tasty and citrusy-floral flavor of the yuzu fruit.

It was the perfect way to end a healthy meal and absolutely guilt-free!

Overall I really did enjoy my dining experience here. Food was beyond satisfactory, coffee was amazing and ambiance was comfy. Absolutely worth the value.👍

However I do wish the cafe makes some changes on their menu as it was rather inconvenient to ask what’s the particular dish about especially when some of their dishes are given unique names and ingredients used were not listed.

Will definitely be back again for more!
