南洋冰室 NanYang Cafe at Cheras Traders Square

NanYang Cafe is a local culinary brand who offers fusion interpretation of Nanyang delicacies.

You may have to queue for a table during lunch hours as hungry customers come about for their signature favourites such as Hong Kong Style Wanton Noodles, Freshly Baked Polo Bun, Nanyang Coffee & Tea.

Prawns & Wonton with Noodles in Soup (RM 11.90)

Their springy noodles and silky juicy prawn wontons rest in a hearty bowl of hot aromatic broth had indeed gained their recognition.

Would definitely recommend this dish.👍

Special Pork Knuckle in Preserved Bean Sauce with Tossed Noodles (RM 12.90)

If you’re looking for something a little more heavier, you should give this a try.

For its price and generous portion of pork knuckle offered, it was definitely worth it. It was really well marinated and almost melt to mouth texture.

Lettuce with Oyster Sauce (RM 7.90)

Beautifully blanched but glad the oyster sauce wasn’t mixed into the lettuce because it was ridiculously salty!

Signature Jumbo Toast with Ice Cream (RM 16.80)

Got to admit the toast was delicious and lightly buttered. It’s definitely not a dessert for 2 but for a 3 – 4 pax.

Would’ve been better if there’s an additional scoop of ice cream so it wouldn’t be too dry. Not recommended and worth the value.🙅‍♀️

I would strongly recommend to go for the freshly baked breads instead. It was definitely a lot more satisfying than the Jumbo Toast we had.

Pineapple Bun with Butter (RM 4/each)

HK street food cravings satisfied!💕 I love how they placed a thick slice of butter on top of an ice cube. It’s really soft and fluffy!

If the crust on the bun was crunchy crumbly sweet cookie-like it would’ve made is so much better. Definitely my favorite and to-go-for at this establishment.

Pumpkin & Cheese Bun (RM 4/each)

Same texture as the Pineapple Bun except this one has cream cheese fillings.

Nanyang Milk Tea (RM 4.90)

A hot cup of milk tea to pair with some breads. It tastes exactly like a ‘Teh Tarik’. Looks like one too!

It’s a decent place to have your HK cravings fixed and for its value. Would definitely drop by again for their Pineapple Bun!

Sen Kee Satay 仙记沙爹 at Desa Aman Puri

39497750_10215823896845885_1217382259275857920_n

Sen Kee Satay has been operating since 1976 (42 years old) now along with Uncle Yap‘s daughter and grandson who’s currently the 3rd generation running the stall. It all started when Uncle Yap used to sell chicken and ducks at a local market.

39453816_10215823902966038_6031645924957093888_n

He was also the poultry supplier for a satay stall opened by an Indonesian named Omar where he then discreetly learned how to make his own satay knowing this could help him during the economic bad phase.

“Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and diligence!” – Abigail Adams

39454626_10215823902286021_4154915168460996608_n

There weren’t many Chinese vendors who sells satay back in those days and oh, one skewer only cost 0.25 cents back then! But as there were getting more and more vendors popping about, Uncle Yap needs to come up with a unique selling point for his stall.

39557759_10215823904086066_6805824302730969088_n

It sparks him when someone asked him “Why have you not thought of selling duck satay?” Though it was a rather hard protein to cope with, Uncle Yap didn’t gave up on trying different types of duck and marination to retain its moisture and getting rid of its gamey flavors.

Satay Sauce (RM11/500gm, RM22/kg)

Their peanut sauce wasn’t like the ones we often had topped with sambal. The peanuts were still carefully toasted by wok to give a touch of ‘wok hei’.

13-15 kgs of the sauce was prepared daily as he’d often get regulars (especially vegetarians) who’d just come for the sauce while having it with the sliced onions and cucumbers! Unfortunately they don’t offer ketupat rice cakes here.

Duck Satay (RM1.50/skewer)

Uncle Yap wasn’t jesting about how he was able to retain the moisture without even a tang of gameyness in the duck satay. It was absolutely pleasurable just having it by its own as well!

Chicken Satay (RM1/skewer)

Their chicken satay was pretty good and well marinated with just the right amount of char. Plain juicy lean meat without any chicken skin skewered in between.

Other than the Chicken & Duck Satay I’ve ordered, there’s Pork & Lamb Satay as well. Sorry, no beef.

Every night there would be at least 500 skewers sold but on the weekends it could go up to 1000 skewersYou’ve got to be there earlier to avoid the long wait.

The Stars of Culinary at Nook shine this August at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral

38131825_10215684324596666_6067188746426515456_n

This August, Nook at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral will give center stage to 5 of its chefs, each with their own specialty dishes to be featured on the buffet line! Proclamations of “Merdeka” are often heard nationwide this August as it is our Independence Day on 31st August but as fellow Malaysians regardless what the occasion is, it is not a celebration without food.

The team of 5 chefs include, 36 years-old Mohd Haffizi Bin Aledul Ginani, known to all as Chef Fizi. He is the man in charge of the appetizers who sets one’s heart on their fellow diners appetite at Nook.

Inspired from his days when Chef Zaki was based at Southern Italy, this classic four cheese pizza has to be one of the most wonderful combinations of bread and cheese imaginable.

Rasa Utara at Berjaya Times Square

The Northern fare Rasa Utara is celebrating its 34th year of business, and currently the outlet operating in Berjaya Times Square aims to serve the best of Northern inspired cuisines.

Ironic enough, throughout my studies in this building I’ve never thought of walking into this restaurant before as it was a little beyond the ‘student budget’ and most of my course mates would often prefer Western cuisines.

37308824_10215579063405202_8875041191192690688_n
Spicy Chicken Chicken – RM18.80

The fried chicken was deep-fried to golden perfection and unbelievably juicy hot with crisp cracklingly flavorful skin though it wasn’t thickly coated with batter. This would go so well with a plate of Nasi Jagung.

37245641_10215579067125295_7061671282600837120_n

Restoran Dragon Star has been around for over a decade in this big neighborhood and always been the family restaurant to go for. The restaurant also focuses more on authentic Cantonese cooking. Keepin’ it real!

Here are some of the highlighted dishes on what we had for dinner:

37321576_10215570200303630_2300417219978330112_n
鹽煙沙薑雞 Smoked Kampung Chicken – RM30/half bird , RM60/whole bird

Free-ranged chicken beautifully marinated in Sand Ginger Powder, giving it a better texture to chomp on. Taste wise its almost like having Salt-baked Chicken except you get to enjoy the skin a lot more.😛

37206087_10215570201183652_4889683823974940672_n
清蒸游水順殼魚 Live Steamed Marble Goby in Light Soy Sauce – Seasonal Price

I absolutely love Chinese-style steamed fish (fresh-from-the-tank) with soy sauce as it lends the fish sweet and salty flavors. The chef also taught us how to identify if the fish was frozen or from the tank based on its texture. Frozen fish brought to steamed would still look the same while fresh from the tank would look eh, distorted?🤷

37209103_10215570201703665_7545682365641654272_n
檸香焗明蝦 Stir-fried Prawns in Homemade Lemon Mayo Sauce – Seasonal Price

The prawns were tender and springy in texture and beautifully coated in their finger-licking homemade mayo sauce with a hint of zest making it an absolute refreshing dish.

Highly recommended for prawn lovers!🍤❤

燒焗排骨支 Grilled Pork Ribs – RM23/small , RM46/large

Pork ribs were absolutely flavorful & well marinated served with crispy vegetable fritters. Its almost like having char siew except you get to indulge the juicy tender meat and fat so much more.

It was quite a crowd-pleasing dish to go for.

37205638_10215570202623688_6604663646792450048_n
紅燒羊腩煲 Braised Lamb Belly – RM27/small RM54/large

The lamb was deliciously braised till tender and gravy was simply rich and flavorsome plus generously filled with dried bean curd and mixed vegetables making it so much better.

This simple hearty dish will have you feeling delightful and comforting.

37191549_10215570203383707_3692471645949132800_n
蝦子鍋仔豆腐 Braised Homemade Tofu with Shrimps & Seasonal Vegetables -RM18/small , RM27/large

Dishes after dishes of meat, its fair to have some braised tofu and seasonal vegetables to have a little balance in our body.😂 The sauce was really appetizing, it makes you just want to top it on some plain rice. Not to mention the generous amount of fresh vegetables in this pot!

Bring your family & friends over, its definitely worth dining for! My personal favorite dish from this restaurant has to be the fish. What’s yours?

Bubur Lambuk Beratur

They’ll also be featuring the all-time favorites such as Nasi Ayam & Itik. Warung Satay, the must-have porridge dish at any Ramadan feast, the Bubur Lambuk Beratur.

The chicken tasted really homely you wouldn’t believe how delicious and satisfying this dish was.

Roasted Duck was absolutely flavorful and moist. What I love about the duck was the fact that the skin was barely chewy and simply delicious.

Their satays has always been my favorite in their buffets. They’ve marinated the both chicken and beef thoroughly it gets really addicting after a few skewers. Grab the chicken satays first because it runs out real quick!🤭🤭

As you know Bubur Lambuk is a quintessential porridge meal especially during the month of Ramadan that makes it such a hearty meal. I was hooked with it and the condiments make it even better. Salted egg is life.

Not to mention their special drinks stall with local favorites, there’s going to be Air Bandung, Calamansi, Teh Tarik, Nescafe Tarik, Kopi Hang Tuah, Sugar Cane Juice, Date Juice and more.

The Slow Braised Beef Rendang, Nook’s Signature for every Ramadan, will be taking center stage at the Carving Station on the buffet line. Slow cooked for over 7 hours and seasoned generously with traditional Asian spices of salt, pepper, cinnamon and star anise.

Diners will be in for a succulent treat with this specially prepared rendang dish which will be available daily on the buffet spread for Ramadan. Definitely won’t be crispy.

Ulam-Ulaman

Can’t get enough of all these local favorite dishes. You’ve definitely got to try their Tauhu Sumbat and Gado-Gado! Drizzle the tofu with a guilty amount of peanut sauce and you’ll be hooked on this. Same goes with the Gado-Gado, nothing better than having a bowl of fresh vegetables with copious amounts of peanut sauce.

Got to love the live station for the Murtabak & Roti Canai. Crispy roti with delicious curry infused meat stuffing. Scrumptious!

Ending the meal with some delectable dessert dishes with some Malaysian favorites is a must.

Nasi 7 Benua @ Koo Boo Cafe at Bayan Lepas

30713122_10214917414544394_4856289091743907840_n

Upon touchdown at the airport, I was craving for some good meal to kick start my trip in Penang island. We were starving and didn’t had the best sandwich on board. As I remember the Nasi 7 Benua was just around the corner, so be it!

You wouldn’t missed the restaurant as there’s a huge sign outside of their restaurant. Unless you or your Uber driver was speeding then probably.😅

30724275_10214917415344414_37949098371842048_o

This restaurant has been opened for 3 years and apparently they’re the first to start this whole 7-colored rice concept!  Ever since their rice dish has been viral all over social media, hundreds of plates were sold daily and there are even days where they’d be completely sold out. Be there at 11:30AM to avoid the lunch crowd!

30716331_10214917412864352_2147453978365919232_n30728421_10214917410184285_5250041810721439744_n

Rice were carefully cupped into the little mould. It may not seem much but there’s literally a portion of a full bowl of rice there. What are the types of rice if you’re wondering?

  • Nasi Putih (Plain Rice)
  • Nasi Tomato (Tomato Rice)
  • Nasi Kacang (Dhal Rice)
  • Nasi Pandan (Pandan Rice)
  • Nasi Minyak (Ghee Rice)
  • Nasi Lamuni (Lemuni Rice)
  • Nasi Hujan Panas (Rainbow Rice)

The varietal of dishes to go with the rice is simply scrumptious as well!

Isn’t it mouth-watering looking at them?🤤
Here’s what I had as suggested by the founder of Nasi 7 Benua, Nurul :

30740216_10214917412424341_6753435773418078208_n

Ayam Masak Merah (Chicken in Red Chili Sauce) & Ayam Masak Kicap (Dark Soy Sauce Chicken) is a MUST HAVE! To be frank I wasn’t really convinced because most of the time when I have these dishes at a wedding luncheon or Raya meals they’re rather dry but I was wrong, both chicken was tender and juicy.

The Ayam Masak Kicap had us guffaw because Nurul told us the locals here would order it as ‘Ayam Negro‘.🙊 It’s a local thing, no racism intended.😳

Its a great place for lunch and I’d like to thank Nurul and her family for the great hospitality.

Kaya 婆婆 Pushcart at Lorong Yap Ah Loy

20180106_134101-01

At the entrance of an alleyway opposite Maybank, this 40-year-old stall is manned by an old woman herself. She offers some pretty delectable kaya Swiss rolls, kaya puffs, egg tarts and kaya. The stall used to be located in an alleyway opposite Central Market.

20180106_134224-01

What makes her Swiss roll so remarkable is the fragrant kaya made from old coconuts. The sponge cake texture was rather light and fluffy as for the taste its a little too sweet for my liking especially when the kaya itself is already sweet. You can purchase them half or a whole Swiss roll.

To some people (especially millennials lol) , it may not look as appetizing as it sounds but trust me, I’d say its one of the few ‘MUST TRY in KL’ and you probably may not be able to buy them in another few years time.

20180106_134216-01

Whenever I drop a visit at Kaya 婆婆’s stall, I’d usually go for her kaya puff for its flaky puff pastry and generous-filling of kaya. There are times especially when groups of tourists and even locals stumble across her pushcart as they were were exploring the older development of Kuala Lumpur, they would buy whatever she has to offer!
You wouldn’t miss the crowds surrounding her pushcart.

20180106_134233-0120180106_134629-01

Her egg tarts aren’t actually her unique selling point nor does it have a wow factor to it but from what I perceive, it’s more for ones who craves nostalgia.

20180106_135058-01

You could also try packing the kaya home as it’ll make a hearty breakfast treat by slapping some kaya and butter on a toast.

On her downtime you’d see her napping on a piece of cardboard box. She wakes up at 2am to starts baking her goods FYI! If you’re feeling hungry, walk down the alleyway and it will lead you to a stall that is famous for their sang har mee or freshwater prawns noodles.

Stall at Lorong Yap Ah Loy
Business Hours: 8 AM – 2 PM (Closed on Sundays)
Address: 5, Jalan Yap Ah Loy 50050 Kuala Lumpur.

Xiang Ji Satay House at Kampung Dua, Melaka

20171205_135932-01

Pork satays are not commonly found and whenever I do think of one, it’ll be here. Their satays are known to be succulent and served with some really irresistible peanut sauce with pineapple chunks in it. No kidding, it’s actually so darn good. Their restaurant setting is pretty much like old-timer coffee shops so it may be a little stuffy when you’re visiting during a peak hour.

IMG-20171205-WA0050-0120171205_132306-01

Their satay has a mix of lean meat and pork fat which makes it so sensational as you’re chewing on it. The fat is barely rubbery!

IMG-20171205-WA0060-01

Satays are grilled in a cubicle to avoid smoking up the entire restaurant.

20171205_132506-01

20171205_132632-01
Otak-otak (RM 1/piece)

When you’re seated, 10 sticks of otak-otak will be placed on your table. It’s optional if you want to have some or you’re only here for the satay but I can assure you’d get your hands on them because it’s simply irresistible! Dip them with the satay sauce for a whole new level of tastiness.

20171205_132955-01
Chicken Satay (RM 0.90/skewer) Pork Satay (RM 0.90/skewer)

We’ve ordered 10 sticks of chicken and pork. They may jumble up both chicken and pork when serving so to differentiate it, chicken is a little more yellowish and the meat is much softer but not as sweet and tender as the pork which you can tell from the picture is slightly more darker in color.
Thoughts? It may be thinner than many other satay stalls were to offer but taste wise is there. Flavoursome.
20171205_132933-0120171205_133501-01

Their sauce isn’t any ordinary sauce as mentioned they’ve got some pineapple chunks in it which gives it a nice sweet and tangy flavor to it. To be warned, they don’t give a generous bowl of it so dip it wisely and if you want more of it? Pay for it.🤷

I wouldn’t claim it’s the best satay in town or Malaysia, but it’s definitely delicious.
